This was a concert you should not have missed. You just had to spare 50,000/= for a ticket where all the collection was going to fund the International Hospital Kampala’s Hope Ward where heart transplants and operations are carried out.

For starters, we were treated to the first ever heart operation that was done at the hospital, on the screen. Forget Grey’s Anatomy, ER and the like—this was real!! Sadly, it did not go well with those who had faint hearts, some former ambassador collapsed.

Kaweesa and Maurice Kirya got the audience singing along and also listening intently when a song unknown to them would be played. These two gentlemen’s voices are unique, strong and identify proudly with Africa. With Kaweesa singing to an older audience and Maurice to the youths, the blend was perfect because it merged the age groups beautifully filling up the Sheraton ballroom.

The stage was amazing, keeping it African, with the pots and the microphone stands too being made out of bamboo. The lighting was terrific. There came a moment when Kaweesa suggested they switch them all off and all we did was listen to them sing in the dark! Imagine that.

Maurice performed songs like Beera Naabo, “Bina Damu (commonly known as “Genda Okole”), “Woman”, “Njagala Gwe”, “Sunshineplus his new tunes, Boda Boda”, “Ugandan Gal” and “Hold On. Kaweesa impressed us too with his “Ethiopian Gal”, Hakuna Matata” and Train(which made me feel like I was in a black American church service) among others.

What made this concert unique besides the stage layout and lighting was the way the two musicians sung each song and unfolded it as a story, and how they blended acoustic with different genres like jazz, kadongo kamu and R&B making it a soulful act. This was indeed music with heart!!!
